The History of “Dokan” Sake
One day while hunting, the samurai Dokan Ota got caught in a shower and stopped at a nearby farm to borrow a straw raincoat.
In reply to his request, a young farm girl offered him a yellow Japanese mountain rose, while reciting an ancient poem:
“Mountain roses bloom in profusion here, but regrettably we cannot afford to lend you even a straw raincoat, though I know you will be inconvenienced.”
This story of Dokan Ota, the builder of Edo Castle, which played a major historical role for over 500 years, is famous throughout Japan. Ordered by the third Tokugawa shogunate to protect the Tokaido High Road, the Ota family moved to Kusatsu in Omi province.
Later the family began brewing sake, naming the product “Dokan” after an early ancestor. This sake has received nationwide acclaim. After moving its brewery to Nada, Kobe, the Ota family continues to be totally committed to improving the quality of the product “Dokan”.
I hope that “Dokan” brings you pleasure as you take part in its exciting tradition.
